Eating droppings, also known as coprophagia, is perfectly normal in foals and is typically nothing to worry about. Usually it occurs when the foal is less than 4-5 months of age but gradually declines, and eventually ceases, as they get older. Previously it was thought that a foal eating droppings, usually its mother’s, helped with the bonding process.  However, it is much more likely that foals engage in coprophagia to assist with the introduction of beneficial bacteria to their gut, which helps aid digestion and may also boost immune function.
