Most horse owners dread the firework season and with good reason!

The loud noise, sudden flashing and strange smells can cause even the calmest horse to become anxious and stressed. As bonfire night approaches, make sure you take precautions to minimise the impact they have on your horse.

Top 10 tips for horse owners this firework season:

  • Be proactive – know when local displays are happening & speak to any non-horsey neighbours as they may not realise how unsettling horses can find fireworks
  • Keep to your horse’s normal routine wherever possible as sudden changes will make him more unsettled.
  • Leave a radio playing outside the stable to help mask bangs – introduce this in advance so they become accustomed to it.
  • Leave your stable lights on to help lessen the effect of sudden bright flashes in the night sky.
  • Make sure you or someone experienced is able to check on your horse regularly during any displays.
  • Provide plenty of forage to help keep your horse occupied.
  • Review the fire safety measures on your yard.
  • Check your fields daily for debris and spent fireworks.
  • Check all fencing and stable latches to make sure they are secure.
  • Introduce a calming supplement.

Nutri-Calm has been specifically formulated to help reduce stress and anxiety. We recommend adding Foran Equine Nutri-Calm Liquid to your horse’s diet in the run up to firework season.  Plus, on the night you know fireworks will be going off, we suggest you also give your horse Foran Equine Nutri-Calm Gel 1-2 hours before it gets dark .
